What They Are

Tactile ground surface indicators — TGSIs — are the raised studs and bars set into the floor that vision-impaired pedestrians read through their feet and a cane. They come in two types: warning indicators (a grid of raised domes) that signal a hazard such as a stair, ramp or platform edge, and directional indicators (raised bars) that guide a safe path of travel.

To be compliant, a TGSI must meet the dimensional and layout rules of AS 1428.4.1, provide the required luminance contrast against the surrounding surface, and carry an AS 4586 slip-resistance classification. On government and transport work the product must also appear on the relevant state's approved TGSI register.

Korb's tactile range spans three families — the polymer Nouvel series, the Renzo integrated tiles and studs, and the Kahn modular, porcelain and solid-carved formats — covering both warning and directional indicators in integrated, discrete and carved installation types.

Every product is available supply-only or as a full supply-and-install package, with set-out and placement detailed to AS 1428.4.1 so it passes inspection the first time.

The premium tactile range. Modular discrete studs, integrated porcelain tiles and solid-carved indicators for architectural and heritage-sensitive projects where the floor finish itself is the design.
AS 1428.4.1
Means to assist the orientation of people with vision impairment — tactile ground surface indicators. Defines TGSI dimensions, spacing, layout and luminance-contrast rules. Korb sets out every install to this standard.
AS 4586
Slip resistance of new pedestrian surface materials. Korb's TGSIs are tested to AS 4586 and carry a P5 (wet pendulum) classification — the highest slip rating — so the indicator stays safe underfoot in the wet.

The Nouvel range is listed on the approved TGSI product registers for VIC (DTP), QLD (TMR), WA (Main Roads) and SA (DIT) — the prequalification that government and transport projects require.
Dimensions

What AS 1428.4.1 Requires.

A tactile ground surface indicator is only compliant if it reads correctly underfoot and through a cane, which is why the dimensions are tight and are measured on the installed product rather than the sample. Warning and directional indicators are never interchangeable: the dome grid signals a hazard, the bar pattern signals a path.

Contrast

Three Luminance Thresholds.

This is where most TGSI specifications come unstuck. The minimum contrast is not a single number: it depends on how the indicator is constructed. All three are calculated with the same Bowman-Sapolinski equation against the actual adjacent floor finish, sealed and installed, rather than against a product sample.

Composite discrete60%. A stud with a contrasting top, for example a carborundum insert. Specifying these at the 45% discrete threshold is one of the most common inspection failures.
Outdoor installationsThe threshold has to be met both wet and dry, and the worst condition governs.
Check the pairing before it is specified. Substrate LRV drifts as concrete ages or is sealed, so a pairing that passed on paper can fail at handover. The LRV calculator runs the Bowman-Sapolinski equation for any two LRV values against the right threshold.
Placement

Where Tactiles Are Required.

Setback drift is the second most common failure on site, usually an install at 250mm or 350mm where the standard sets 300mm plus or minus 10. These are the placements that appear on almost every commercial and transport project.

Escalators and travelatorsWarning indicators 300mm, plus or minus 10, measured from the end of the moving handrail, not from the comb plate. Measuring from the comb plate is a recurring inspection failure.
Railway platform edgesWarning indicators set back 600mm from the edge, because the hazard is falling rather than descending, and run the full length of the platform.
Intermediate stair landingsRequired only where a handrail is broken. Continuous handrails on both sides waive the requirement.
Kerb ramps and crossingsWarning indicators at kerb ramps, pedestrian crossings, and beneath overhead obstructions lower than 2000mm headroom.
Open spacesDirectional indicators where the accessible path is not defined by walls, kerbs or landscaping. Minimum 300mm wide, which is 4 bars, laid parallel to the line of travel.
Mid block crossingsDirectional indicators leading from the accessible path to the warning indicators at the crossing edge. Minimum 600mm deep, which is 8 bars, where the path is approached at an angle.
Formats

Integrated, Discrete
and Carved.

The installation format drives the contrast threshold, the substrate preparation and the replacement cycle, so it is worth settling early rather than at shop drawing stage.

Integrated Tiles
30% Contrast Threshold
The indicator and its base are a single piece laid into the floor build up, giving a continuous panel rather than a field of individual fixings. Fastest to install over a large area and the simplest to replace as a unit. Available as Renzo Tile, Kahn Porcelain and the Nouvel Plate.
Discrete Studs
45% or 60% Contrast Threshold
Individual studs drilled and fixed into the substrate on a set out grid. The right answer where the existing floor finish is staying and only the indicators are being added, and where a stone or terrazzo floor should read through. Available as Nouvel Classic, Renzo Classic and Kahn Modular in stainless, black, brass, champagne and heritage finishes.
Solid Carved
Architectural and Heritage
The tactile pattern carved directly into the stone itself, so there is no applied component to lift, discolour or date. Specified where the floor finish is the design and an applied indicator would read as a retrofit, particularly on heritage sensitive work. See Kahn Solid Carved.

Common Questions.

What is a TGSI?
A tactile ground surface indicator: the raised domes or bars set into a floor or footpath that a vision impaired pedestrian reads through their feet and a cane. Tactiles, tactile indicators, floor tactiles and TGSIs all describe the same component.
What is the difference between warning and directional tactiles?
Warning indicators are a grid of raised domes and signal a hazard such as a stair, a ramp or a platform edge. Directional indicators are raised bars and guide a path of travel, laid parallel to the direction of travel. They are never interchangeable, and directional bars rotated 90 degrees is a recognised inspection failure because they then point along the wrong path.
How far from the stairs do tactile indicators go?
300mm, plus or minus 10, from the outer leading edge of the stair nosing, with a depth of 600 to 800mm across the full width of the path of travel. The same setback applies at the top and the bottom of the flight.
Do ramps need tactile indicators?
Ramps steeper than 1:14 do, at the same setback and depth as a stairway. Where the ramp is bounded by continuous handrails that extend onto the landing, indicators are not required at that end.
What luminance contrast do tactiles need?
It depends on the construction: 30% for an integrated indicator, 45% for a discrete stud, and 60% for a composite discrete stud with a contrasting top such as carborundum. Outdoors the threshold has to be met wet and dry. Specifying a composite stud at the 45% discrete figure is a common and expensive error.
Do tactile indicators need a slip rating?
Yes. They are classified to AS 4586 by wet pendulum, and the Korb range carries a P5 classification, the highest slip rating. Ask for the classification report on the installed product rather than range level marketing data, because that is what an access consultant will want at handover.
Do tactiles have to be on an approved register for government work?
On most state government and transport projects, yes. The Nouvel range is listed on the approved TGSI product registers for Victoria (DTP), Queensland (TMR), Western Australia (Main Roads) and South Australia (DIT), which is the prequalification those projects require.
